The Three R's....Why Recycle, Repurpose, and Reduce?

Do you ever think about how much garbage there is in the world?  Do you stop before throwing something in the trash and wonder where it ends up, if it decomposes, or if it sits there for years?  Most of us don’t put much thought into throwing something away.  Someone comes to our house each week and dumps our garbage in a truck and takes it away.  That’s all we know, right?

Well wisegeek.org says, “…with the garbage produced in America alone, you could form a line of filled-up garbage trucks and reach the moon. Or cover the state of Texas two and a half times. Or bury more than 990,000 football fields under six-foot high (1.8 meter high) piles of waste.”  That’s a lot of garbage.  And that’s just our country.  That does not include other parts of the world.

Homemade Refried Beans

I love this recipe for homemade refried beans from The Prairie Homestead.  I was a bit skeptical at first because I thought it may take a lot of time, but it doesn’t if you prepare your beans ahead of time.  I used dry beans that I soaked and then cooked in the crock pot during the day.  When I got home, they were ready to be used.  My husband and I absolutely love this recipe AND the fact that it is homemade, from scratch.  I will never go back to canned beans.

What's for Dinner?

The last few days I have really started to scrutinize where my money is going when it comes to food, so I decided to try and figure up the cost per serving of the meals that I make.  This week’s recipe is one for quinoa which until this week, I had never made nor even eaten.  I went online and looked up some good flavors that go together and just threw some together hoping it would be good.  I didn’t exactly measure the ingredients but they should be close to exact.

The Fun Part of Gardening

I’m finding out the fun part of gardening.  It’s getting the weeds out...  I’m totally kidding.  That is the least fun part.  We decided to have a pretty big garden this year but since our seedlings started coming up, we haven’t been weeding it often enough.  We’re just now making a dent in the weeds and what’s so bad are the thorny ones.  The bigger they get the harder they are to pull up too.  This evening I found some in our carrots and they ended up pulling up a few carrots too.  L

Why I Cut Out Processed Food

"Pink Doughnut" by Grant Cochrane from freedigitalphotos.net

What goes through your mind when you see commercials on television that show big, juicy hamburgers and crispy French fries with a very large, ice cold soda?  Does your mouth start to water?  Do you give in and go buy it for dinner?  I have been guilty of that.  Advertising knows what it’s supposed to do.  The foods portrayed on television or on billboard ads are made to look very appetizing.  They even go so far as to offer “healthy” options for people who are weight conscious or watching what they are eating.  The problem is, even the “healthy” options offered in processed form are not healthy at all a lot of the time.

Several months ago I ran across a website that gave people a challenge.  For 100 days, go without processed food.  Eat only real foods that are wholesome and in their natural state.  I have learned a lot from this website and others as well regarding how to eat healthier, what eating processed foods does to your body, and other things.  I know firsthand that my eating habits play a role in how my body functions.  That is why I chose to give processed foods up…completely.

Homemade Whole-Wheat Tea Cookies

So to start off my posts of homemade whole foods, I wanted to start with something sweet.  I will try to adapt this recipe with honey instead of sugar in the future because I want to use a less processed sweetener.  This recipe is for tea cookies which go great with milk like any cookie, but can also be eaten alongside fruit for a “healthier” dessert option.  Portion control is always key, especially when having dessert.  (That tends to be my weakness when it’s soooo good.)  These cookies don’t take very long to make, and they are delicious.

Welcome to Natural Made Simple!

Welcome to my new blog!  I am so excited to share with you the wonderful things I have been learning!  I’ve come across a way of life that makes me feel excited.  It involved converting to a more simple and natural approach to life.  There are so many gadgets and gismos in modern day living that is supposed to make life easier, but in a lot of ways, they complicate things.  I realized that I wasn’t spending my time on the things that are important because of modern technology.  I was sucked into the way of life that a lot of people lead these days, and I was unhappy, unsatisfied, and it was making me unhealthy.  I decided to change the way I was living by turning off the computer for several months, and focusing on my actual relationships, not my Facebook newsfeed.  It changed my perspective on life.  Now I am back on the computer to write this blog, but it is to encourage and help you in finding your best life as well.
